]]>A wonderfully talented singer and songwriter, Melissa Ferrick is also a very amusing and enjoyable performer.

In previous years the snarky humor was aimed at herself, it was biting and hinted of an inner argument that hadn't quite been resolved. These days she seems to be less concerned with what she's doing wrong and instead is focusing on enjoying life and she seems to be having fun growing.

The lighter outlook has not hurt the honesty of her lyrics and I find myself still identifying with the relationship difficulties that have always been her focus. There seems to be a bit more solution boiling to the top of her most recent record, rather than the carousel of self-created misery and turmoil that strapped itself in to previous albums.

This tour came across as more of a celebration with, and a thank-you to fans than previous ones that were external, well-disguised attempts at self-acceptance. Melissa's performance at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia was worth far more than the refreshingly low ticket-price, for both myself and, I'm willing to bet, for Melissa.

]]>Melissa Ferrick came back to the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia.

A wonderfully talented singer and songwriter, Melissa Ferrick is also a very amusing and enjoyable performer.

In previous years the snarky humor was aimed at herself, it was biting and hinted of an inner argument that hadn't quite been resolved. These days she seems to be less concerned with what she's doing wrong and instead is focusing on enjoying life and she seems to be having fun growing.

The lighter outlook has not hurt the honesty of her lyrics and I find myself still identifying with the relationship difficulties that have always been her focus. There seems to be a bit more solution boiling to the top of her most recent record, rather than the carousel of self-created misery and turmoil that strapped itself in to previous albums.

This tour came across as more of a celebration with, and a thank-you to fans than previous ones that were external, well-disguised attempts at self-acceptance. Melissa's performance at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia was worth far more than the refreshingly low ticket-price, for both myself and, I'm willing to bet, for Melissa.

Melissa Ferrick came back to the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia.

Melissa Ferrick headlined The Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia and played an amazing show, per usual.

Cindy from Dead Rock West, Melissa's opener, had signed Sammy's other arm so Melissa "had" to sign this one.
A conversation ensued and Melissa wrote "Surrender."

Now, if only Sammy could follow directions...

]]>My nephew, William, with Rich (far left) and Melanie from the band, Sirsy.

As they hail from New York, I hadn't heard of Sirsy until my friend Rachel was promoting their appearance at the tiny, now defunct Firehouse in Fairfax, Virginia.

I was immediately struck by the HUGE sound that came out of just those two people. Yes, they are a two-person band and yet they play sometimes 3 instruments at a time.

Melanie is not just the big-voiced singer but also the (stand-up!) drummer. Yes, she stands and plays the drums while she sings and like they say on TV commercials, But WAIT, there's MORE!
Melanie also continues playing the drums while periodically playing the melodica or flute; and she also has a drum pad set to play bass and lord only knows what else, she probably has a harpsichord in there somewhere.

The guitarist Rich, who seems quite shy at first, comes out of his shell as he starts playing and gets into his groove. I have to imagine that his apparent shyness is likely just the result of what has to be similar to cramming for a big test as the conglomeration of pedals and even a snare drum at his feet are likely daunting.

Melanie is a captivating front-woman. For those seeing the band for the first time I imagine a lot of respect and admiration is felt immediately upon Melanie first opening her mouth to sing WHILE DRUMMING.
Perhaps that is just felt by those of us to find it hard to tap our feet and sing at the same time.

Probably needless to say, I instantly became a Sirsy fan and promoter myself, and when they next played at Jammin' Java I brought a veritable posse with me and they now all sport Sirsy T-shirts.

I feel a bit left out because I know that in New York the fans show up in force and the crowd rocks out along with the band. In Fairfax, the crowd slowly wanders in closer and then, if they're actually standing, sway only slightly.

Sirsy took time and care to select a label to represent them, and they are performing like mad in the Big Apple state, but have yet to venture down south again.
